Just don't expect it to be what it's not and don't expect your perfect experience for free. It is originally developed by q1701 based on import-html plugin. All in all you can tell this is a labor of love for the developer. This plugin allows you to import notes from Markdown files. By you paying the monthly fee of $5 (or $50/year) you are getting in on this process and have a say in the direction the app takes. You cannot use Obsidian for work related notes unless you pay. But that shouldnt be a problem if your main need is note-taking. The developer interacts with the community and listens to input. Although its not as much an editor as an outliner notes are strongly hierarchical, and its difficult to use for writing plain markdown files.
The reviews stating that unencrypted notes touch US servers or that the developer can view the information, what evidence do you have besides having a foggy notion of how encryption works or a random conspiracy-theory? 3.
